Carshalton Athletic midfielder Sean O’Toole says he and his team-mates must be more clinical after a sixth defeat in seven left the club hovering perilously close to the Ryman Division One South dropzone.

Saturday’s 3-1 reverse at fellow strugglers Ramsgate – Tommy Bradford netted the consolation – means the Robins are 18th in the table, just four points ahead of danger with two games to play.

The Robins had their chances in Kent, hitting the woodwork three times, but O’Toole is not clinging to what could have been.

He said: “You could say we were unlucky against Ramsgate, but we also weren’t clinical and it has cost us a result.

“They had three chances and took them all while we created maybe seven, eight and finished one – that says it all really.

“The manager can only do so much – it’s down to us players to put the ball in the back of the net and perhaps we need to start being a little braver, throw ourselves into things a bit more.”

The Robins have picked up just eight points from the last 36, but victory over Merstham this weekend at Colston Avenue (kick-off 3pm) would still be enough to ensure survival.

O’Toole said: “We need to be the masters of our own destiny by better handling the pressure we’re now under.

“We can’t rely on the teams between us and the bottom three also losing, we must take the initiative in our next game because we are good enough to beat anyone on our day.”

O’Toole, the club’s joint leading goalscorer is suspended for the weekend’s game, leaving the door open for Mickel Miller to top the charts.

“I hopes he gets a hat-trick if it means we win,” O’Toole said.

“I don’t care if anyone overtakes me – so long as we get the three points. I just want to see us take the game to Merstham and get back to winning ways.”
