Hampton & Richmond Borough boss Alan Dowson left it late to finally get his man last week and new striker Ben Hunt is hoping to repay his faith with goals.

The 24-year-old target man had his registration agreed on Saturday morning and hours later started for the Beavers as they came from 1-0 down to beat Harrow Borough 2-1 at the Beveree in dramatic circumstances.

He had been substituted long before Mark Onyemah and Matt Drage struck the late goals that gave Hampton their first league win since November 22, after Harrow had taken a first half lead through a controversial penalty.

Hunt made 14 appearances for Bristol Rovers during his early career in before being released in 2010, but has slowly drifted down the non-League ranks via Dover Athletic, Lewes, Gloucester City and Bishop’s Stortford.

He switched to the Beveree after a five week spell at Cray Wanderers and now he wants to fire the goals that can ensure Ryman Premier League safety for the Beavers – and resurrect his career.

“The gaffer tried to get me on-loan a few years ago when I was playing for Bristol Rovers and gave me a call this week saying he was looking for a striker,” he said.

“It was my first game for about four or five weeks because I was at Cray just trying to get my fitness up.

“The plan is to come down here, score, as many goals as I can and, hopefully, push us up the league again.

“I know what standard I can play. My aim is to get fit, score goals and, hopefully, get back up the leagues myself. Hopefully, that can be with Hampton and I’m looking to be here for as long as the manager wants me.”
