Carshalton Athletic overcame an early scare to comprehensively beat Mole Valley SCR and reach the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The Robins went behind inside the first 10 minutes but they hit five without reply, including two from midfielder Jamal Alexander, while the hosts had both a penalty saved and a man sent off in the second-half.

"We knew they'd be up for it but I thought we weathered their quick start and our passing game put us on the front foot," Alexander said.

"We took the game more to them in the second half and we took all of our goals well, two factors we all felt were important."

It was Mickel Miller who drew the Robins back on level terms and captain Tony Sinclair headed them ahead before the break.

Alexander then got in on the act with an 18-yard strike on 51 minutes before he and substitute Paul Scott added the fourth and fifth with close range finishes late on.

Carshalton goalkeeper Jack Eden played his part at the other end by saving a Michael Campbell penalty, which was given with the score at 3-1, while Valley left back Rob McCarry received a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle on 85 minutes.

The Robins have two Ryman Division One South league games this coming week, starting with a trip to Horsham on Tuesday night, and Alexander says the cup win should buoy the squad.

"We have to try and keep this momentum going," he added.

"Our next two opponents are near the bottom of the league so we have to be on top of our game and keep taking our chances."

Robins go to either Redhill or Horsham YMCA on September 13 in the next round of the FA Cup.
