Alan Pardew hopes to see a reaction from Wayne Hennessey after the Crystal Palace stopper made another costly blunder in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The Eagles started brightly at the Etihad Stadium but Hennessey was unable to deal with Fabian Delph’s long-range strike as City took the lead.

Hennessey, who made a costly mistake at Villa Park last week, would have expected to save the England international’s ambitious drive.

Pardew, 54, has called on Hennessey to prove that he still deserves to be Palace’s first choice stopper.

“Wayne is going to have to show me how he reacts this week in training,” Pardew said.

“After a mistake at Aston Villa, he needed to respond today and make another mistake.

“The ball is in his court to keep out the other two goalkeepers but I need it in training, I need to see a reaction from him.

“I will give him that chance because he deserves it.”

After Delph’s opener, a Sergio Aguero brace and David Silva’s late goal wrapped up a convincing 4-0 win for City.

The result was Palace’s third successive league defeat and stretched the club’s goalless run to five Premier League games.

However, Pardew insisted that his side did not perform badly in Manchester.

He said: “I’m an experienced manager and I’ve not had many teams that have played as well as that and come away with a 4-0 [defeat].

“It was a game that really and truly, we were in. It was pretty even. Man City are obviously clinical when they have the cushion of two goals, and they proved that. But we weren’t peppered.”

Pardew also reiterated his desire to bring in a striker during the January transfer window, playfully suggesting that Aguero would fit in nicely at Selhurst Park.

“Obviously we are trying to bring a striker in,” he added.

“Put Aguero in our side against Man City and I think we would have won that game.”
