James McArthur hopes he has done enough to keep his place in Crystal Palace’s midfield after admitting he has not been happy with his recent performances.

Palace put an end to a three-game losing streak with their goalless draw against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Scottish international celebrated the birth of his son last week, and believes the new addition has given his performances on the pitch a boost.

“My wee man’s given me my energy back,” he said.

“I’ve not really been happy with my performances of late but the manager’s showed belief and he’s stuck with me.

“I thank him for that and hopefully I repaid him with my performance.”

McArthur admitted that Palace’s recent losing streak puts places in the starting line-up under added pressure.

“I’m very critical of myself, when the team’s not winning I’m very harsh on myself especially,” he said.

“With the competition in the squad you need to keep trying to play as best as you can.

“If you’re not playing well there’s players that will step in.”

McArthur hopes fans agree that Palace were the stronger of the sides and should have taken all three points, despite United’s control of possession.

“I hope the fans don’t start thinking we didn’t play well because we didn’t have a lot of possession, this team’s [United] has the highest possession in the league,” he added.

“We had, I would say, the best chances - we were the closest to scoring.”

The midfielder also insists that Palace are capable of repeating last season’s 3-1 win over Liverpool when the sides meet at Anfield on Sunday.

He said: “When you beat these big teams it gives you a real sense of belief that you can do it again, and we’ll be looking to do that.”
