Addicks chief Guy Luzon has admitted he didn’t know much about the rivalry with Crystal Palace – until now.

Charlton were drawn against their SE London rivals in the Capital One Cup draw on Tuesday night, with the third round clash set to take place at Selhurst Park on September 23.

The game is all-ticket and a bumper crowd is expected as the Championship Addicks take on Premier League neighbours managed by former SE7 boss Alan Pardew.

Throw in the bitterness and anger created by a hugely controversial six-year ground sharing experiment which began almost 30 years to the day of the upcoming tie, and it is fair to say there is plenty of spice attached to this particular match.

Israeli Luzon, who only arrived in England earlier this year, has little knowledge of all the history attached to the fixture.

But he got a glimpse earlier on when he arrived for training at Sparrows Lane.

“I don’t know about what this game means for the fans but today in the morning the staff told me it is a very, very crucial game for the fans and for the club,” the head coach said.

“It is a derby in London but we are not focused now about what will happen in the cup, we are focused only about Wolves.

“We will be sure that before the game against Crystal Palace we will be ready.”

Charlton have so far used the Capital One Cup to make wholesale changes and give some of the younger players a chance to impress.

But the boss was asked today if he might change that tactic bearing in mind who the next opponents are.

“First it isn’t important who plays - young or old or senior players,” Luzon responded.

“It is important which result that we bring.

“Also, against Hull City a lot of young players played and they showed good quality and good character.

“This is what is important but I don’t know what to tell you exactly now what is happening against Crystal Palace because we have time.

“We have a lot of games before we arrive at this game. We will do everything to win every game in the league or also in the cup.”
