Winger Wilfried Zaha has promised to be more ruthless in front of goal this season after setting himself a double figures target.

The 22-year-old opened his and Crystal Palace’s Premier League account for the 2015-16 campaign with a 39th minute opener to put the Eagles in front at Norwich City on Saturday.

Second half efforts from Damien Delaney and debutant Yohan Cabaye ensured the Londoners began on a winning note with a 3-1 success over the Canaries.

And Zaha is promising Eagles fans there are more goals to come from him as Crystal Palace look to establish themselves in the top half of the Premier League.

He said: “Normally when someone crosses it I am so far behind, so I told myself that I need to get in the box more. I need to get goals.

“If I am not getting goals and assists, what I am doing?

“I have told myself that I have to get goals. This season there is no reason for me.

“The gaffer has given me a chance to play, I have gone through pre-season, so there is nothing stopping me.”

Asked if manager Alan Pardew had set him a goals tally for this season, Zaha replied: “No, but I have set myself a target to try and get at least 10 goals this season.”

The winger returned to SE25 last year after a brief and ultimately unsuccessful spell with Manchester United, striking four times in 35 appearances back with his boyhood team.

But after starting the current campaign with a goal already to his name, Zaha is convinced scoring regularly will help take his game to the next level

“Definitely, because I will be more comfortable in front of goal,” he explained.

“Once you start scoring goals, they come easily.”

Palace were perhaps fortunate not to have been trailing by the time Zaha volleyed them in front just before the break because newly-promoted Norwich were in control of  the early exchanges, missing several opportunities.

Zaha was the first to accept the Canaries had the early edge, but was also quick to point out this current Palace side knows how to dig deep in the face of adversity.

He said: “The gaffer told us to have a winning mentality.

“The way we started the game was not the best.

“We could have been 2-0 down but we managed to get a hold of the game and get our goals.

“Norwich are back in the Premier League and they came back firing.

“Maybe we need to work on our fitness.

“They just had that extra yard on us. Once we managed to get hold of the game, we were decent from there.”

Jason Puncheon provided the cross for Zaha’s strike and the goal scorer was keen to praise his team-mate for setting up the opportunity.

“Punch is playing amazing,” the England international added.

“As soon as I saw him go down the line I thought I need to get in there.

“I have missed those in training before so when it came I made sure I focused. I just made sure I got it on target.

“I am buzzing to get the win because the games we have got coming up are difficult.

“These were a big three points.”

Next up are FA winners Arsenal for a London derby at Selhurst Park on Sunday, with Zaha hoping the Eagles can make the most of their new look pitch.

“That might help as well, because last season you could be running and just hurt your ankle,” the winger said.

“I am glad we managed to sort it out. I am looking forward to it.”

Asked what he is expecting from the Gunners, Zaha said: “The usual really.

“They are a good team and they can punish you.

“We need to keep hold of the ball when we get a chance to and takes our chances when we get them.”

Many experts are predicting a bright season in SE25 and Zaha believes Pardew has installed a genuine feel-good factor at the club.

“The gaffer has made us think ‘we are not that bad!’.

“Before were always the underdogs. He told us that we can play if we believe in ourselves.

“He has brought in a couple of players to help the squad and we need to believe in ourselves.”

One of those new faces is Cabaye, with Zaha suitably impressed by what he saw from the Frenchman in Saturday’s 3-1 victory.

“Any run you make he will reach you,” added Zaha.

“Anything you do, he will get the ball to you basically.

“I am just buzzing that I have got the opportunity to play with him.”
