Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew knows Chelsea will eventually win the Premier League title, but he also knows they can be hurt – because he has done the hurting.

As manager of Newcastle United, Pardew inflicted on the Blues one of the two defeats they have suffered this season.

Jose Mourinho can wrap up a third Premier League title with a victory over the Eagles on Sunday, while Pardew’s men are playing for pride.

But Pardew also wants a reaction to what he called “the worst performance” during his time at Selhurst Park when Palace went down 2-0 at home to Hull City last weekend.

He said: “Two weeks ago we're talking about a top 10 finish. Everyone was commenting on how well we play. But you can come unstuck quickly in the Premier League.

“Last weekend was below the group's standard. I didn't even need to tell them, they told me. We didn't reach the levels last week.

“You don't always win when you play well. But on Saturday it was by far the worst performance during my time here.”

He added: “We need to respond following our recent defeats. For ourselves and to keep the Premier League title race interesting.

“I know Stamford Bridge well. If there is a team that I know well, it'd be Chelsea. I studied there.

“We've got to try and produce a performance that doesn't get carried away in the emotion of the day.

“We're going to try and get a victory at Stamford Bridge, which no one else has managed.

“I've seen a lot of games at Stamford Bridge. They dominate possession, but they can be hurt.”

Pardew, who has had run-ins on the touchline and in the media with Mourinho, orchestrated Newcastle United’s win in December with a game plan, but he knows the Blues will be ready for him this time round.

Pardew said: “We had a good game plan and deserved to win on that day. We wasted time, I'd expect Jose to do the same.

“Jose will be looking to solutions to what we're going to do. We have to counteract that as we go.”

He added: “All managers respect each other. I have great respect for Jose and he does for me.

“I hope after the game we have a glass of wine and he's not jumping around too much.”
