A JOURNEY that began for some in the early part of last season reaches

its conclusion this week, when the final stages of the Scottish Power

National Bowls Championships are decided at the Northfield complex, Ayr.

The titles in the singles, pairs, triples, fours, junior singles, and

senior fours will be fought out over the next three days, with the 32

qualifiers in each event battling it out.

Just one former winner has qualified in the singles, Simon Thomson,

from the Adrian club in Falkirk, who triumphed in 1990, launches his bid

against Graham Bain, from Maud.

Thomson is one of five internationalists in the field, the others

being Campbell McNeil, of Eyemouth, Robert Marshall, from Slateford,

Armadale's Grant Knox, and Paul Foster, from Troon Portland.

McNeil takes on one of the four Glasgow hopes Robert McGary, of

Linthouse, Marshall meets teenager Billy Mellors, from Summerside, Knox

faces Sauchie's Jim Thomson, and Foster lines up against Sandhead's Hugh

Morrison.

In addition to McGary, Glasgow's hopes rest on Kingswood's Tom Wyper,

Graham Baldie of Hawthorn, and Springboig's Graeme Gwynne.
