Alan Pardew believes new signing Pape Souare needs to “play his own game” after he struggled on his debut against Liverpool last weekend.

The Senegalese international full-back signed from Lille on a three-and-a-half year deal on transfer deadline day.

Pardew developed a reputation for signing foreign players while at Newcastle United, and he reckons his experience of dealing with players from France will help.

He said: “His English is okay. I’ve had some conversations with him since the Liverpool game, I think he made some mistakes that were quite natural for an African player who plays in France.

“My experience of that sort of player is to talk to him and try and get him to understand that not everything has got to be literally taken.

“He has to play his own game. Sometimes when you come to a club and your manager says ‘stay narrow’ or something you stay narrow.

“This week’s been about trying to get him to play his own game. Just listen to the bits and bobs, don’t take it too literally.”

England call-up: Scott Dann has been impressing Alan Pardew since the manager's arrival at Selhurst Park

Pardew added that he’s been impressed with centre-half Scott Dann, as talk of an England call-up, headed by team-mate Brede Hangleand, grows.

“He’s been one of the big surprises since I’ve come to this football club, how good he is,” Pardew said.

“I’ve been very impressed with him and I think that says it all, from the centre halves I’ve worked with.

“I just think he’s been great since I’ve been here, as a character and as a player, so long may that continue.”

Promising young Welsh player Jonny Williams suffered another setback in training this week, but Pardew spoke highly of the midfielder.

“Jonny Williams is a great little footballer, and he has to try and lose that ‘little tag’ and become a big player and a big personality,” he said.

“He keeps getting setbacks and I feel so sorry for him, he’s such a lovely lad and everyone loves him at this football club.

“There’s a reason for that, he’s such a fantastic personality and I can’t wait to start working with him.”
