Crystal Palace stars Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon visited to the Sutton Life Centre, to kick-off a scheme that will tackle child obesity.

The Premier League stars were at the launch of the Sutton Healthy Lives Programme, a joint project between the Crystal Palace Foundation and Sutton Council yesterday afternoon.

Staff from the foundation will work with every primary school across Sutton over the next three years, taking them through fitness games and giving advice on healthy eating.

Children from primary schools across the borough were at the life centre for the launch, where they were given a taster of how the scheme will work.

Over the next three years the scheme will help roughly 3,000 children across the borough.

Speaking at the launch, council leader Ruth Dombey said: “We want to give children the best start in life.

“By encouraging them to be active and to understand nutrition, we are teaching them valuable lessons that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.”

Crystal Palace Foundation trustee Steve O’Connell said: “I am delighted the foundation have taken this step to enhance the fitness and health of children across Sutton.

“Too many children are overweight these days, it is a real issue, and it’s great the foundation will be leading the way on that.”

Eagles co-chairman Steve Browett said: “It’s fantastic and forward thinking that local councils like Sutton are looking to our foundation too help deliver their vision for the borough.

“Crystal Palace FC might be in the Premier League but we are still very much a family club.”
