Brentford once again turned in a disappointing performance away from home as they lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday.

The Bees had their fair share of possession, but were undone by a piece of quick thinking from Rovers at a second half free kick and were unable to find a way back, before slipping to defeat against the side previously bottom of the table.

Afterwards a furious Andy Scott said: “I’m flabbergasted to actually concede a goal like that. We have experienced players on the pitch and it is remarkable, remarkable, that we lost the game due to that goal. Nobody gives us goals like that.”

After two consecutive wins at home, Scott fielded an unchanged side from that which defeated Colchester on Tuesday night.

Both sides enjoyed early chances, as first Craig Curran broke down the left for Rovers and after cutting inside Danny Foster unleashed a 25 yard shot that sailed wide of the left hand post.

At the other end a John Bostock corner from the left was headed just over the bar by Leon Legge.

When Tranmere won a throw on right, Curran picked the ball up on the edge of the six yard box and did well to turn and shoot, with Wojciech Szczesny pushing the ball behind for a corner.

Szczesny was again called into action when he reacted quickly to smother the brall at the feet of Terry Gornell in the six yard box after Gornell had received the ball from a thrown in and turned smartly in the box..

Shaleum Logan was then shown a yellow card for a foul on Wood and Bostock hit a low 30 yard free kick inches wide of the left hand post.

After half an hour Curran took the ball wide on the right just inside his own half, and after cutting inside Ryan Dickson raced away into Brentford’s box, where a crunching tackle from Legge stopped him in his tracks.

Rovers took the lead on the hour mark when the Bees defence was caught napping at a free kick. Instead of crossing into the box, John Welch slipped the ball out to Curran wide on the right who fired the ball past Szczesny into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Tranmere almost doubled their lead when the Bees defence failed to deal with a throw from the right and Gornell’s shot was inches wide.

Pim Balkestein saved a certain goal when he blocked a shot from Gornell in the six yard box inside the final five minutes.

At the other end Charlie MacDonald got the faintest of touches on a Dickson cross from the left but it was inches wide of the right hand post.

Brentford now have a week to reflect on yet another poor result away from home, before preparing to host league leaders Leeds United next Saturday.
