Walton Casuals 0-2 AFC Wimbledon

The curtain came down on the Dons pre-season programme tonight with a hard-fought win over Walton Casuals.

The Ryman South side, managed by former Wimbledon striker Neil Shipperley, gave Terry Brown's team an example of the type of rough and tumble they can expect at Haig Avenue when they open their BSBP campaign at Southport on Saturday.

In the end, an eighth friendly victory from ten wasn't in doubt as a stronger than expected side started with Danny Kedwell the surprise inclusion.

Stephen Gregory, Ryan Jackson and Christian Jolley also begun the match with the season now only days away.

Wimbledon avoided any injuries and Mark Nwokeji played nearly 70 minutes, although out wide, to put him in the frame to travel to the north west at the weekend.

It took them nearly half an hour to get going with passing poor but once the scoring was opened there was no looking back.

Striker Kedwell forced a great save from Mark Philpot as the keeper turned his lob round the post for a corner.

But from the set piece, the glovesman allowed Ismail Yakubu's header to trickle into the net for 1-0.

Philpot made amends on the stroke of half-time when Liam Hind nearly flashed a sharp cross into his own net. The keeper plucked the deflection out of the top corner in a rare moment of entertainment.

The second half wasn't much better but returning Nwokeji skimmed the crossbar from a poorly defended corner.

Lee Minshull came close to making it two after Delano Sam-Yorke played the midfielder through with an hour gone. Philpot was equal to the powerful low drive.

Luke Moore was introduced with 25 minutes remaining and he helped make the game safe.

Half-time substitute Andre Blackman was unselfish and teed-up Moore, whose cross was fantastic and lively Jolley made no mistake by nodding into the net from eight yards.

Charlie Ide made Jack Turner in the Dons goal work from long range but it was otherwise a quiet night for the 17-year-old.
