AFC Wimbledon defender Ryan Sweeney will complete formalities on a switch to Premier League Stoke City today.

The two clubs are thought to have agreed a £250,000 deal that will see the Kingston 19-year-old join up with the Potters' development squad for the forthcoming season.

The Republic of Ireland U18 international made 10 appearances in the Dons' back four in the second half of last term as boss Neal Ardley's men secured promotion to League One via the play-offs.

Sweeney, who has agreed personal terms over the move, was at Stoke's Clayton Wood training ground yesterday for a medical and is expected to seal the deal ahead of the weekend.

He first joined AFC Wimbledon in 2005 aged just eight and completed his route into the senior team when he made his Football League debut against Dagenham & Redbridge before his first start came against Oxford United in April 2015.

He made the most of Karleigh Osborne's injury in February to establish himself in the Dons' back four leading him to sign a new deal at the Cherry Red Records stadium in March.

"Stoke City can confirm the club has reached an agreement with AFC Wimbledon over the transfer of Ryan Sweeney to the bet365 Stadium," said a statement on the City website last night.

"The Potters have also agreed personal terms with the player who is at Clayton Wood to undergo a medical.

"The 19-year-old is expected to complete the formalities of his transfer on Friday."
