Neal Ardley reckons AFC Wimbledon fans can ask for no more from his players after Saturday’s dramatic last-gasp win over York City.

The Dons boss hailed his charges’ commitment and energy in the second half as a debut goal from Rhys Murphy and a Jake Reeves wonder strike over-turned a 1-0 half-time deficit.

Minstermen skipper Russell Penn gave the visitors the lead five minutes before the break, but Murphy levelled 25 minutes from time before Reeves’ 93rd-minute 30-yard stunner kept the Dons’ play-off push alive.

Ardley said: “I thought it was really harsh on us to come in 1-0 down. We’ve been sucker-punched for their goal and then kept going and going and going.

“They’re those moments when you think, maybe the luck’s going against us, but you have to make your own luck.”

Ardley brought Tom Elliott on for midfielder Andy Barcham with 20 minutes left as he chased all three points and the tactical change had an immediate impact.

”At half-time I just said to the boys, ‘Write your own script’, and to be honest, from the moment we went 4-3-3, it was one-way traffic,” Ardley added.

“Their goalie pulled off three or four saves, they’ve blocked on the line, we’ve had one volley going in that’s hit our striker and come back, it was ridiculous.

“But the commitment, the energy, the boys looked so fit and strong in the last 20 minutes of the game. If you’re a fan, you can’t ask for any more than that.”

“It’s taken a worldie strike to win it, but how often have we come away from games feeling really hard done by?”

It marked a first win in six games, and keeps the Dons three points off the top seven with nine games to play, starting with a trip to Hartlepool this weekend.

Ardley said: “The dream we had at the start of the season was to get promotion and I still think we can.

“This squad’s the best I’ve had it since I’ve been here, it’s the best this season, with the addition of Darius [Charles] and Rhys Murphy.

“We’ve got five strikers any club would give their right arm for. We can beat anyone and we can win any game we want to.”
