Neal Ardley has filled the hole in AFC Wimbledon's backline ahead of tomorrow's League Two clash with York City.

Central defender Darius Charles has joined from Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season - although the Brewers have a 28-day call-back option.

Charles once turned out for Sutton United on loan from Brentford, but who most notably spent five seasons with Stevenage before joining Burton last summer - and he now has more than 200 first team appearances to his name.

AFC WIMBLEDON: "Cut up" pitch levels the playing field for Ardley

The former Ebbsfleet man, 28, can step into the space left by Ryan Sweeney's suspension, and although he is yet to play a game this season because of injury, Ardley told Dons Player he was delighted to get his man.

"We’ve been looking for a long time for a centre-back, one with experience, one with knowledge," he said.

"We looked at Darius over a month ago, but he was a little bit behind at that time in terms of being ready to play and we had to sit tight and look at various other options in the meantime.”

Ardley added: “He was due to have a game for their U21s last week, which would have been the final piece in the jigsaw in terms of his recovery from injury, but it got called off.

"We then had to wait until he played on Monday, but Nigel [Clough] has been brilliant with us all along and spoke to me on Tuesday.

"They put it to Darius, they had quite a few clubs sniffing around and wanting to sign him, but he was very keen to come here.”

Charles and striker Rhys Murphy, last week's loan signing from Oldham Athletics, are available to play this weekend.
