Neal Ardley has revealed his ethos for between now and the end of the season – let’s enjoy it, let’s go for it and let’s see what happens.

His message is not just for the AFC Wimbledon players, but also the fans, who are enjoying the Dons’ best ever run of form in League Two.

After beating Luton Town 4-1 last weekend, thanks to goals from Lyle Taylor [two], Ryan Sweeney and Sean Rigg, the Dons moved to within three points of the play-offs, but with games in hand.

It also means they have lost only once in their past eight games, and have lit the fuse of expectation among fans – something the boss is keen to play down however he can ahead of the season’s run in.

He said: “Now is not the time for pressure, now is the time to enjoy playing football and to just go for it.

“The form has been good and my job is not to make a big deal out of it – yes, we’re trying to make that top seven, but let’s enjoy the games, let’s go into them and be excited by them, and if we lose, well then we lose.

“Hopefully that kind of attitude will help keep the momentum going and do something good.”

Ardley is no stranger to trying to release the pressure on players, and he is not afraid to delve into psychology to achieve his aims.

Ahead of the final game of his first season in charge, when the Dons needed to win to avoid relegation, Ardley pinned a poster on the dressing room wall ahead of the game proclaiming whatever happens “it’s in the script” and we will survive.

He said: “You need different approaches for different situations. 'It’s in the script' was at a time when there was great pressure – people could lose their jobs, everything the club had worked for could go out the window, so that was immense pressure that can weigh you down.

“This time around it is about ‘You know what, let’s enjoy this, let’s go for it and try to win every game and see where we end up at the end of the season’.”

He added: “If we don’t make it, then we’ll probably have the best season the club has ever had, but it won’t be for the want of trying and no-one can have a go at us.”
