AFC Wimbledon striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has admitted his status in the game has been enhanced by computer games and social media.

The Beast, who runs the Beast Mode clothing label, is a regular on Twitter, and is often seen promoting games such as FIFA 15.

The football simulation classes the Beast as the strongest player in the game, and he is called up to show that strength at promotional events.

That has propelled him to celebrity status and he has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Lethal Bizzle.

However, the 33-year-old, who has five goals in 27 appearances so far this season, told BBC Five Live Sport that despite his notoriety he knows what where his primary responsibilities lay.

He said: "I am a footballer first and foremost. I still would have got 100 plus league goals without the football games, but the games have allowed me to have Premier League status in the lower leagues.

"That is what FIFA and social media has done."

He added: "My career still stays the same. I still would have played in the lower leagues and I still would have scored the goals that I scored.

"It's just given me a bigger profile outside of football."
