Manager Neal Ardley was a relieved man after AFC Wimbledon eventually found a breakthrough to overcome a "classic away performance" from Notts County on Saturday.

Dannie Bulman cancelled out Haydn Hollis’ first half opener in the 85th minute, before Adebayo Akinfenwa headed the winner in stoppage time.

After going behind to struggling County in the 15th minute, the Dons seemed destined for a frustrating afternoon, but ultimately found a breakthrough - much to the delight of their manager.

Ardley said: “At half-time we said, they’ve gone one up from a free-kick and then shut up shop.

"It’s hard in League Two and we just had to keep going, it’s not like the Premier League where you have the intricacy around the box to pull people out.

“We had several players who weren’t at their best today, but we just kept going and the energy levels and work-rate were great.

"I felt as if the game was played in their half, particularly in the second half and the players have done well. So obviously we’re delighted.”

Tensions among the crowd at the Cherry Red Records stadium began to rise as the Dons failed to build a meaningful move to break down the visiting defence, and the relief could be heard all round when Akinfenwa’s header rippled the bottom left corner of Roy Carroll’s goal.

Ardley added: “They were certainly trying to do a classic away performance, sticking men behind the ball and holding out for a 1-0, and we lacked the quality to open them up.

“Everyone was getting anxious, and on another day it doesn’t happen.

"Azeez has done fantastic for the second, soon after everyone was moaning as he should have done better.

"All that matters though is we got the win in the end and will take that added confidence forward.“
