On the eve of the big League Two kick-off, AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley is in the mood for snapping off hands.

The Dons completed their pre-season campaign on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Cheltenham, and the real business starts tomorrow (Saturday) against Plymouth Argyle at the Cherry Red Records stadium.

Ardley completed his summer signings with the capture of former Millwall skipper Paul Robinson last week.

The centre-back brought the number of new names to six, and Ardley is delighted with every single one of them.

“If you had told me I’d have this group of players in and ready to go a week before the start of the season, I would have snapped your hand off. I’m delighted with it,” he said.

“I knew what I was getting with Lyle [Taylor] because I worked so hard to sign him. He’s obviously shown that if we can get the bodies and the quality in and around those areas he’s a good finisher.

“I am absolutely delighted to have got Paul [Robinson] now. He is a leader and has been a captain everywhere he has been.

“Having played with Paul at Millwall, I know how good a player he is and we are getting one of the best centre backs in the league.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Ardley is keeping his feet on the ground when it comes to the Dons’ chances.

Having drawn the opening games of the season for the past two years, Ardley knows that even if you are feeling confident, nothing is guaranteed.

“When we are at it and have momentum in games we will be a real force to be reckoned with,” he said.

“But you’ve got to earn the right to build momentum. Everyone goes in with optimism at this stage.”
