AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley was delighted with his side‘s winning performance to end a tough run of games.

They picked up a narrow 1-0 win over Portsmouth at the CRRS after Ben Chorley turned Craig Tanner’s shot into his own net early in the first-half.

The visitors pushed forward after the break, but rarely threatened with Dons coming close to doubling their lead through Tanner and Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Ardley said: “It doesn’t matter how you win you just need to win. It’s been a tough three weeks with the number of injuries and suspensions we have picked up.

“I fancied us to win today, but it’s difficult playing Wimbledon style. I didn’t realise how strong the wind was against us and at that point I would have taken 0-0 at half time.

“But I was delighted in what was the end of a tough week because we dug in and we picked up a really good win.”

Blank: Matt Tubbs could not get past Ross Worner in the Dons goals on his return to the CRRS

The fans saw Matt Tubbs return to his former club for the first time since joining Portsmouth in January.

However he was unable to help his side climb back into the match after they fell behind and Ardley was pleased with how well the Dons coped with their former player.

“He [Tubbs] had one glancing header from the penalty spot that Ross [Worner] saved well, but other than that he’s been kept quiet, as was Jed Wallace who has been a major part of their revival,” said Ardley.

“Portsmouth have scored quite a few goals lately and Wallace has been a major part of it.

“I did a presentation yesterday on making sure we kept him quiet. Obviously with people like Tubbs as well we had to do it right and we did.

“We limited them and it was a game where we had more chances.”
