AFC Wimbledon chief executive Erik Samuelson has hailed the FA Cup draw against Liverpool as another milestone in the life of his beloved Dons.

He also, in a nod to the club’s stadium proposals sent to Merton Council in December, suggested it would have been nice to have a bigger stadium to accommodate more fans.

Although he did also admit that even the new proposed stadium would struggle to cope with the interest the FA Cup tie has generated.

He said: “It is the first time we have been in the third round as AFC Wimbledon, which is a major milestone in our development as a club.

“It is also the first time we will have played a Premier League club in a competitive game, which is another milestone.

“And to get Liverpool and all the 1988 memories that evokes is absolutely fantastic – wouldn’t it be great to have a stadium worthy of such a game.”

He added: “For many of the fans it will be an emotional day as they realise just how far this club has come.

“And when I stop to think about it, I know and share those emotions.”

Meanwhile, Dons go into the big cup game on good form following back-to-back wins in League Two over the festive period.

Frankie Sutherland and Matt Tubbs got the goals that saw off Portsmouth 2-0 at Fratton Park on Boxing Day.

Tubbs was on target again in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Exeter City at the Cherry Red Records stadium – Adebayo Azeez bagged a brace, and Adebayo Akinfenwa came off the bench to hit the fourth.

The wins lifted Dons to 11th in the table, four points off the play-off places.

Boss Neal Ardley said: “Credit to the boys because the energy and work-rate they put in during the second game in just over two days was phenomenal.

“If you’d asked me at the start of December what would have been on the wish list it would have been to be in the third round of the FA Cup with a big tie and to be in the top half of the table.”
