An issue that seems to resurface every time we lose a game this season, is the apparent lack of 'game-changing' players to make an impact from off the bench.

Last season it was Kevin Sainte-Luce and Chris Arthur tasked with the responsibility of salvaging results after slow starts, and they quickly became fan favourites as a result.

Unfortunately, neither of them have come anywhere near the heights of last season this time out.

Arthur just hasn't been the same since his ankle injury in 2013, and Sainte-Luce's failure to impress has seen him out of the squad for some time now.

The real problem with "impact subs" is that having a player who can't defend, or play for more than 45 minutes without getting tired, is difficult to justify financially.

Wimbledon Times:

Much to learn: Kevin Sainte-Luce needs to improve all aspects of his games before he can return as the impact sub he once was

Ardley has repeatedly identified Sainte-Luce's total lack of commitment in defence as a problem that has to be resolved before he can return to the side.

When added to the fact that he managed only 50 minutes or so before having to be subbed off in both of his starts this season, it starts to become clear why he has fallen out of favour.

So surely the next priority, if the coaching staff feel neither of these players are capable of further development, is to get a replacement in this January?

But this won't be an easy process - with Sainte-Luce and Arthur still on our books, we don't necessarily have the budget to take a gamble on yet another impact substitute.

And there lies the problem - signing any player for this role is a risk. Finding someone with the right balance of flair and responsibility isn't easy.

Another option is to recruit from within - Adebayo Azeez, for example, has been used off the bench on a regular basis this season, but doesn't yet have quite the same spark as Arthur or Sainte-Luce at their best.

So for the time being, we might have to do without a genuine impact sub. I remain hopeful that Sainte-Luce will eventually get back to his best, but who knows how long that will take - and Arthur's poor form at Woking suggests that his time with us is done.

If we're going to be winning games, it'll have to be the first 11 that do it, without the need for reinforcements. But is that really too much to ask?
