Leicester City left back Callum Elder seems set to join Championship side Brentford on a long-term loan deal as a replacement for departed skipper Jake Bidwell.

The 21-year-old, who is yet to make his senior City debut, is thought to have signed a new three-year contract with the Premier League champions with a view to continuing his development in the Championship.

He had been a target for League One Peterborough United, where he had a successful spell last term.

Posh director of football Barry Fry has confirmed United are no longer in the race to sign the highly-rated Australia U20 international, who made 20 appearances for Peterborough last season before seeing his season curtailed by injury.

Bees head coach Dean Smith has been using academy graduate Tom Field at full back during pre-season, but has made no secret of his desire to secure more cover in that department.

“We tried hard fo Callum and he indicated he wanted to come back and play for us," Fry told peterboroughtoday.co.uk yesterday.

“But he has now signed a new contract at Leicester and it has been decided he will play in the Championship this season. I understand he will sign for Brentford."
