Despite their momentous achievement, AFC Wimbledon’s Erik Samuelson celebrated Monday’s promotion to League One in a typically calm manner.

While fans and, chance are, players alike partied into the early hours after the wonder of Wembley, the Dons chief executive probably fell asleep in front of the television at home.

However, his shut-eye would not have come until after his traditional celebration ice cream.

Samuelson, who is tee-total, said: “I have a Magnum Classic – I am very set in my ways.

“I will go home, have my ice cream and fall asleep in front of the television - this is our tradition on a Saturday night, my wife and I.

“She nudges me when it is time to slope off to bed. We live the high life.”

Samuelson was part of the small band who formed AFC Wimbledon in 2002, and he admitted the club is now exceeding his initial targets.

“I did not think much beyond the Football League, we knew that would be the difficult thing,” he said.

“I always thought if we could get in the Football League we would survive comfortably and we would take it from there, and that’s what we’ve done.

“We spent four years consolidating, and now we’ve gone and done it.”

He added: “I thought in the second half [against Plymouth] we were dominant.

"I was never completely confident, but they never looked like they were going to score, and we did.

“I thought the referee had blown for full time after the penalty because I thought it was time, so I shook hands with the opposition chairman, which was a bit rude of me, but I think he has other things on his mind.”
