AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley revealed that careful planning, coupled with the experience in his side, were the keys to securing promotion to League One.

Goals from Lyle Taylor and Adebayo Akinfenwa from the spot proved too good for Plymouth Argyle at Wembley in front of almost 60,000 fans.

The 2-0 win sent Dons into League One after they finished seventh in the League Two table, and overcame Accrington Stanley in the play-off semi-finals.

AFC WIMBLEDON: Kennedy signs off with play-off glory, an assist and almost a penalty...

Ardley said: “It feels surreal at the moment. It just hasn't sunk in. It's what you dream of.

"We took it stage by stage. Getting into the play-offs was our first goal.

"Then we got there and it was about getting to Wembley. We prepared them to the letter to win this game.

“I've got a wonderful group of players who have experienced Wembley and play-offs and they could do all the motivating in the dressing room.”

With his rich history connected to the club, Ardley knows exactly what success means to everyone at AFC Wimbledon and the army of fans that followed them to Wembley.

He said:  “To stand there in front of thousands of people who had their club ripped away from them 14 years ago, as one of their own, well it doesn't get any better than that.

“I'm looking forward to playing against some good sides in League One next season.

"We'll probably be in that bottom four in terms of budget, but that doesn't mean we can't stay up.”
