Callum Kennedy says he has signed off on his AFC Wimbledon career in the best way possible after a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle sealed promotion to League One.

The full-back’s contract has run out, and he revealed that Neal Ardley has told the 26-year-old that his future lies in a different direction.

However, Kennedy, who provided the cross for Lyle Taylor’s vital opening goal at Wembley, is not unhappy about the decision.

He also explained how the injury time penalty was eventually given to Adebayo Akinfenwa – despite both Kennedy and Adebayo Azeez wanting to take it.

He said: “My contract is up and the gaffer thought it was time to go separate ways, I respect that. I’ve had a great season and what better way to go out.

“[Jon] Meades has had an unbelievable season, and while you never want to lose your place, if I was going to lose it to anyone, I would want it to be him. The gaffer has faith in him.

“I wish him all the best. I am just over the moon that I got this opportunity.

“It was a bit hard knowing it was my last game, but I genuinely wanted to win promotion with this group of lads – we go on holiday tomorrow and what a way it seal it.”

He added: “I am overwhelmed, happy and proud – it has all come together.

“In the past eight weeks as a group it has gone to new level and in the last 10 games of the season we have not looked back.

“We came with respect for Plymouth, we knew it was going to be a tough game, but it was done in my eyes.

“I could not see anything other than us going through, I have never felt so sure about anything.”

Dons sealed their promotion when Azeez was felled in the penalty area deep into injury time – and he wanted the glory for himself.

Kennedy said: “Ade won it and he wanted it, but for personal reasons – I lost my dad this season – I wanted to take it as a salute to him.

“So Ade gave the ball to me, then Bayo came over and said he wanted it because it was his last game, and I was like, ‘It’s my last game too’ and I want to take it for my dad.

“It was a heat of the moment thing – but as long as we won I could not care less. I am over the moon.”
