Sutton United assistant manager Micky Stephens admitted there are still creases to iron out ahead of the big National League South kick-off.

United were held to a 1-1 draw at Carshalton Athletic, who ply their trade two leagues below in Ryman Division One South, on Tuesday night.

Tom Bolarinwa opened the scoring in the first half, but United were pegged back before the break when Ashley Robinson fired past Ross Worner.

Although Mickey Spillane had a goal ruled out for off-side and Dan Fitchett forced a fine save from Matt Willard in the second half, it was the Robins who will take more from the result.

Stephens said: “We’re still working our way to the start of the season.

“There are bits that we have been working on that we seem to be doing well, but there are other bits that need more working on.

“Our delivery at set plays was not great at the weekend [v Welling] and not very inventive against Carshalton.”

He added: “But our team shape has been better and people knowing their roles, what to do in certain situations and their understanding of individual roles – that is generally better.

“They’re not always getting there at the moment, but that will come with fitness.

“We have a good platform to work from and have a few training sessions to iron out a few bits and pieces.”

United’s pre-season ends this weekend when Bromley are the visitors to the Lane.
