Chelsea captain John Terry returned to his old stomping ground to watch the Blues' youngsters kick-off their pre-season campaign at Ryman Premier League Kingstonian.

The 34-year-old former England international was inundated with 'selfie' requests as Chelsea's U21s ran out 1-0 winners in front of 940 fans in Kingston thanks to a Tammy Abraham strike.

Terry, a four-time Premier League champion at Stamford Bridge, played reserve team football for the Blues at Kingsmeadow earlier in his career when Chelsea hosted their second string matches there.

The match saw the first home appearances for Ks new boys Ricky Sappleton, Dan Bennett and Harry Odematey, while Max Hustwick made a welcome return to Kingstonian colours.

The result came after boss Tommy Williams' men started their own pre-season campaign with a 0-0 draw at Ryman Division One South Whyteleafe on Saturday.

And the manager is not concerned by his side's lack of goals thus far.

"I've got no worries over our lack of goals, yet," he said.

"We are still four weeks away from the start of the season and preparations are going well.

"Saturday was about getting everybody used to twisting and turning again and now it is all about getting our fitness levels and match sharpness together."

He added: "Monday was a great event for the club. To have Chelsea come and play here was brilliant. They have some of the best young players in Europe, so it was a real test for us.

"I was really pleased with how we played and the discipline we maintained with our shape. We've not really worked on patterns of play yet, so they took on board our instructions very well.

"Saturday's game at Hastings United will be a better guide as to where we are in terms of our preparations, but on the whole I'm pleased with how things are going."

Meanwhile, Kingstonian have reached a financial settlement with Hampton & Richmond Borough over the transfer of Josh Casey.

Casey is still under 24 years old and as such Ks were entitled to compensation from the Beavers for the midfielder's services.

"None of us wanted this to drag on or finish up at a tribunal, so I am delighted we could settle this amicably," said Kingstonian co-chairman Mark Anderson.

"Steve McPherson [Hampton chairman] and Alan Dowson [Hampton manager] were, as ever, good to deal with and I am sure everyone at Kingstonian wishes Josh well at his new club.”
