Brentford co-director of football Phil Giles has shed some light on how he and head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen will work to turn the Bees from Championship play-off hopefuls to promotion favourites.

Giles and fellow director of football Rasmus Ankersen have been charged with finding the players to beef up Dijkhuizen’s options as he bids to build a squad that will have plenty in the tank to compete at the business end of next term.

Forty six league games caught up on the Bees last season as they looked jaded and short of ideas in two play-off semi-final defeats to Middlesborough.

Bees fans have been curious as to how the triumvirate of Dijkhuizen, Giles and Ankersen will work when it comes to recruitment.

And Giles is clear on one thing – it will be done by consensus.

“Marinus will identify what area he wants to strengthen and he can suggest either the area or a name he likes,” he said.

“We’ll go away research the player and scout him in the normal way and then we will come back and discuss the players with him.

“Alternatively, he might say to us find me a player in position ‘Y’ because of injury and we’ll then bring some names to the table.

“He’ll give us some feedback on which players suit the way he wants to play.

“When we all agree then we will go for the player.

“It is not a case of us saying you should sign this player. We all have to agree.”

Much has been made of the role statistics will play in Brentford’s recruitment process and Giles insists traditional scouting methods will play their part.

“We have a scouting network in place like all football clubs and we watch players play football,” he said.

“There has also been an investment in data and we will marry the two together to get the best overall view of what that player is capable of and how they might fit in.”
