AFC Wimbledon pair Robin Bedford and Marc Jones start a gruelling cycle challenge today (Friday) in the name of charity – and they will be aiming to beat competition from clubs around the country.

Bedford, the Dons kit man, and Jones are wearing special edition AFC Wimbledon outfits to support Prostate Cancer UK, and they are among 200 cyclists taking part in the London to Amsterdam event.

All 72 Football League clubs are represented, and there is a twist during the 150-mile test.

Bedford said: “There will be a bit of friendly competition between clubs with organisers running a league table to see who can raise the most money.

“They will give out a ‘leader’s jersey’ similar to the Tour de France. ”

He added: “Over the past two weekends we have completed 50-60 mile rides and our last one was up and down the Surrey Hills.

“We’ve had lots of good luck messages, including from people affected by Prostate Cancer.

“They’ve told us that they appreciate our support.”

Jones, one of the Dons' founder members who completed the event last year, said: “I’m delighted to skipper AFC Wimbledon again in this exciting challenge and at the same time raise money and awareness for an amazing cause.

“The event is brilliantly organised and there's a real sense of togetherness on the ride with the various club riders giving support to each other.

"Last year I was a lone AFC Wimbledon wolf so I'm pleased to have Robin along this year having spent 12 months telling him he had to do it."

He added: “There's a real sense of achievement when you hit Amsterdam and realise you have ridden all the way from London.

"It's a great feeling knowing you've represented the club in the fight to beat prostate cancer.”
