Ross Stearn wants to create more of a spark at Sutton United than he was allowed at Bath City.

The 24-year-old trainee electrician will join his new team-mates at Gander Green Lane next month as boss Paul Doswell starts his reshuffling of the United pack.

Stearn hit 16 goals in 17 starts for Bath last season, but his frustration at not been given more starts opened the door for Doswell’s approach.

Now the attacking midfielder cannot wait to make an impression on the United fans, and make the most of Doswell’s attacking ethos.

Stearn said: “I’d been at Bath City for two seasons and started 39 games and scored 29 goals – it’s not a bad record.

“It would have been nice to have started more games, but you’ll have to ask the manager why I didn’t, because I don’t know.

“We played a diamond in the midfield and I think we were quite negative in that sense, it was never all out attack and I was one of the players that did not play because of that.”

He added: “I played in the games where he could afford to go more expansive and when I did play it seemed to work, but it did not matter how many I scored, I was still not looking forward to the following weekend because I knew I would be back on the bench.

Thumbs up: Ross Stearn cannot wait to get started at Gander Green Lane

“But having had a chat with Paul, he and I are going in the same direction and hopefully I can play a lot more and score a lot more at the same time.”

Not only is Bristol-based Stearn starting a new life as a United player, he will be starting a new life as a father next month when he and his partner have their first child.

Add into the mix the fact they have just bought their first house together, Stearn could be forgiven for wanting to take things easy, but far from it.

“There is a big change coming,” he said.

“The little one is due on July 7, we’ve just bought a house and now I’m going to be commuting 200 miles to play at Sutton United.

“I’ll be the newbie at United for a while, the only guy I know is Kevin [Amankwaah] who is from my neck of the woods and we’ll be driving down together.”

He added: “But this is a great move for me. When I spoke to Paul and he told me about the direction the club is going in terms of the development behind the scenes, then it was very exciting and I want to be a part of that.

“And the 3G pitch is great for someone like me. If you’re a big ugly centre half, then it doesn’t make much difference.

“But to an attacking midfielder like me, knowing you’re going to be playing on such a quality surface every other week, it’s great.

“The squad at United is plenty good enough to go on again and I think Paul is just trying to add a couple of the right players to that squad to make it tick – fingers crossed everyone stays injury free and we can have a good season.”
