By beating the leaders of Ryman Division One South last night (Wednesday), Whyteleafe have done what no one else has managed this season - and boss John Fowler insists it was no fluke.

Jason Thompson headed the only goal in Leafe’s 1-0 win at Burgess Hill Town to end the Hillians’ unbeaten league record this season – which, prior to last night’s defeat, had extended to 36 games.

The win keeps Leafe in the final play-off spot, with a five-point cushion and a game in hand on Herne Bay in sixth.

Leafe host Carshalton Athletic this weekend as the final seven games of the season get underway.

Fowler said: “I had a feeling that if Town’s record still stood when we played them, we could end it.

“And you could see in the lads’ eyes that, after the Faversham game [3-2 win] on Saturday, they knew they could beat Town.

“It was a really good performance and certainly no fluke. We know we have the quality to produce great performances and goals out of nothing.”

He added: “After going 1-0 up, we defended as a team. Everyone was closing down and working really hard to shut them down.”

Ending the Hillians’ unbeaten league run – the side have only lost three cup games all season – is up there as the most important win in Fowler’s time as Leafe boss, although it is not the biggest.

“A lot of the teams around us were looking at us to slip in the last couple of games, so to get maximum points was vital, and it does give us some breathing space.

Back: Roscoe DSane is available for this weekend's visit of Carshalton Athletic after serving a three-match suspension

“However, we know from experience how quickly things can change and if we lose a couple back-to-back then it’s open again.

“That’s why we have to approach the Carshalton game in exactly the same way, and if we work as hard as we did in the past two games, I know we can get the three points.”

He added: “In terms of the biggest game in my time here, that has to be beating Ashford to win the [Southern Counties East League] title last season.

“Everyone was expecting us to win that, but no one is expecting us to repeat promotion in Division One South.”

Fowler welcomes back Roscoe DSane from suspension for the visit of the Robins (kick-off 3pm).
