Whyteleafe boss John Fowler slammed the referee after three Leafe stars were sent off in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Whitstable.

Sol Patterson-Bohner, Dylan Merchant and Bentley Graham were all shown red cards in the second half of the Ryman Division One South clash.

Leafe, 2-0 ahead thanks to goals Sam Clayton and Roscoe DSane, relinquished the lead when down to 10 men, but held on to claim a point.

Fowler said: “It’s the first time I’ve had three men sent off. The game should not have been played in the first place because the pitch was unplayable, but the referee was forced into getting the game on by Whitstable.

“We said we’d look at it after the warm-up, and it still wasn’t great, but we went wit h it.

“We asked the referee to take the conditions into account with any decisions he made, and he said he would.

“But what he said and what he did were two different things. All the bookings were soft bookings, and he was very fast with yellow cards for us, whereas he’d talk to their lads.”

He added: “There was nothing malicious in any of the tackles, and they certainly weren’t fouls that denied a goal-scoring chance.

“Despite that, the boys showed a lot of spirit and character to dig in and keep the score to 2-2.”

All three players will miss the trip to East Grinstead game on January 31, but are available for this weekend’s visit to Church Road of Merstham.

Leafe have dropped out of the play-offs and are five points behind Worthing in fifth, albeit with a game in hand.

After a thrilling start to the season, Leafe’s results have dropped away – it has not been helped by a nasty habit of allowing two-goal leads to slip away.

That affliction raised its head in Kent, as it did at home to Sittingbourne and at Chipstead, costing Leafe seven points since the turn of the year.

Fowler said: “We were comfortable at 2-0 at Whistable, and in all fairness their goal has come out of nothing and against the run of play - the guy hit a 30-year worldy into top corner.

“We had opportunities to go three or four ahead, but we have not taken them and that seems to be the pattern.

“If we’d scored the third one, we would have gone on to win the game, no matter how many players we had on the pitch.”
