A brilliant, resilient performance saw Brentford secure a 3-2 win over Millwall at the New Den on Saturday.

After establishing a two goal lead early in the second half thanks to an Andre Gray double, the Bees were rocked as the Lions scored two in the space of two minutes.

But an own goal from Danny Shittu, also claimed as his own by Bees defender Harlee Dean, shortly after restored the Bees lead and they held on to haul themselves into a play-off spot in the Championship table.

And boss Mark Warburton believes the performance proves his side more than belong at Championship level.

At the start of the season the team lacked self-belief," he said.

"Hopefully you've seen now that they belong at this level.

"We were a little unlucky at Bournemouth and Watford, but we're now getting our just rewards.

"Griffin Park is a bit of a fortress and we're now getting the away wins at places like Nottingham Forest and now here."

He added: "This league is so tight. We've always said if you win three in a row you're in the play-offs.

"If you lose three you're in a relegation spot. Our only focus now is on Fulham.”

Early on persistent work down the right saw Alex Pritchard and Moses Odubjao combine, before the latter fired over the bar.

Millwall looked dangerous when they broke down the right, setting up Magaye Gueye, whose shot was deflected for a corner.

After Jake Bidwell cleared the in-swinging corner, Pritchard raced away down the right, before feeding Jota, but the Spaniard wasted a good opportunity as he fired over the bar.

The Bees enjoyed another great opportunity when some nifty footwork from Jon Toral saw him set up Andre Gray, but the striker fired just wide of the left hand post.

Millwall responded with a great cross from the left by Matthew Briggs, which Richardo Fuller headed wide.

Odubajo was almost caught napping when Matthew Briggs got round the back of him, only to see David Button deny him at the near post.

The Bees took the lead just before the break when a deft pass from Pritchard released Gray on the right hand side of the box and he calmly slotted past David Forde.

In the early stages of the second half Lee Gregory picked up the ball outside the box, only to see his shot take a deflection off a Millwall player as it flew over the bar.

The Bees doubled their lead when Alan Judge picked up the ball on central midfield and an inch perfect pass released Gray, whose impressive finish saw him fire past Forde.

Within a minute Millwall pulled one back when, after winning a corner on the left, Danny Shittu scored from close range.

The Lions drew level just a minute later when Shaun Williams picked out captain Alan Dunne, and he found the bottom left corner with a precision finish.

Gray came very close to his hat trick when he unleashed a fierce shot from 25 yards, which Forde got his hands to, then watched as the ball trickled over the by-line for a corner.

In a titanic battle the Bees took the lead again when an own goal from Danny Shittu saw him bundle the ball home from close range at the back post after Gray crossed from the right.

More good work from Gray saw him find the by-line, before his cross across the six yard box went untouched.

Substitute Stuart Dallas did well to win the ball on the left before racing into the box and firing wide of the near post, as Brentford showed great resilience to hold on for a third victory in the space of eight days.
