Brentford defender James Tarkowski scored his first goal for the club on Tuesday and declared fighting for promotion beats a relegation scrap any day of the week.

The 21-year-old defender traded life at struggling Oldham Athletic for a move to west London in January and has so far helped his new team to seven points from three starts.

Tarkowski’s exploits set the Bees on their way to a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in midweek to follow up Saturday’s win by the same score over Bradford City.

The run has seen boss Mark Warburton’s men bounce back quickly from a 3-0 defeat to League One leaders Wolves to stay in the hunt for automatic promotion to the Championship.

And for Tarkowski, with second-placed Leyton Orient the hosts tomorrow, that remains very much the plan.

“People look at the Orient game as an important game because it could be viewed as  six pointer,” he said.

“But in all honesty they are all important games from now on.

“Although I’ve only been here since January you still feel that pressure to get promoted from the fans and from everyone at the club.

“It is a much nicer pressure than being involved in a
relegation battle, that is for sure.

“It was a tough decision to make the move here, because I had been at Oldham for quite a long time and grown up there.

“But now, once I’d been here a week it feels like home.”

Tarkowski is yet to concede a goal let alone taste defeat since making his debut in a 0-0 draw at Carlisle United.

And, after Tuesday’s shut out, he reckoned it was no coincidence.

“It is no accident we’re not conceding, because we are playing well at the minute,” he added.

“That is not really so much to do with me, we are just
defending well as a team.

“We have been limiting other teams to very few chances. Now we need to keep getting the points on the board.”
