Club captain Kevin O’Connor nailed his colours to his mast this week claiming he does not want to play for any other club than Brentford.

The 31-year-old one-club man made his first start for the Bees since a 4-0 defeat at Bradford City in September in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Port Vale, which came thanks to goals from Marcello Trotta and substitute Will Grigg.

O’Connor, who has been plagued by injury in the past two seasons, is out of contract in the summer and already preparing for life after football by taking his coaching badges.

Boss Mark Warburton confirmed last weekend he had opened talks with the  fans’ favourite over a new deal and the midfielder-cum-defender knows where he wants to finish his career.

“We’ve sat down and talked about it and there has been mention of a possible coaching role on the table,” he said.

“I’m not naive enough to think I can carry on playing forever, so I am thinking about the future.

“I’ve already started my coaching badges and I’m looking to get them done and hopefully I can do that and stay with Brentford.

“I’d love to finish my  career here.

“Hopefully, we can sit down, talk a bit more and have everything sorted in the next couple of weeks.”

O’Connor slotted in at centre back as if he had never been away at the weekend as David Button kept his 11th cleansheet of the campaign.

The result was an eighth straight League One victory – a club record – that kept Warburton’s men top of the pile ahead of Saturday’s trip to Walsall.

“It has been a while since I played so it was really nice to come back in to a side that just keeps on winning,” he added.

“There were a few changes to the team, so it was important to keep the run going.

“It shows what strength in depth we have and the quality is there for us all to see.

“Someone said we set a new club record at the weekend, so this is the best run of form I can remember.

“You never know how long it is going to last, but once you get on a roll like this you just expect to win.”

It is nearly 14 years since veteran O’Connor made his first team league debut in a 0-0 draw with Wycombe Wanderers at Griffin Park in February 2000.

And he admits he is enjoying life underhis latest boss as he approaches the 500 appearance mark.

“I’ve played under him before when he teamed up with Nicky Forster,” said O’Connor, pictured left.

“It worked really well and things have just carried on from there.

“The lads are really enjoying training, there is a really good buzz about the place  and it is showing on the pitch on matchdays.

“The boys are coming to work with a smile on their faces and that makes all the difference.

“If you are enjoying your work then you are going to play much better and that is what we are seeing.”
