Despite a nail-biting finale at Church Road, Wimbledon CC skipper Neil Turk could sit back and relish the run in to a third consecutive Premier Division title, all thanks to Twitter.

Wimbledon needed to win their final game at home to Banstead on Saturday to be sure of pipping Weybridge to the title.

However, with his charges struggling on 69-6 chasing 198 to win, Turk knew Weybridge were heading for defeat at Guildford by following Twitter, making the Wimbledon score null and void.

Out in the middle, Ben Compton (75*) and Dan Hooey had no idea of the Weybridge score and they knocked off the final winning runs with one ball remaining, to put the icing on the cake.

Turk said: “It was a really close game, and we knew we were in trouble but by following the Weybridge game on Twitter, we knew we were safe.

“The guys in the middle did not know, and I am really pleased they got those runs because we still wanted to end on a winning note.”

He added: “Winning the league three times over is a great achievement, but we are very lucky that we have a very strong squad.

“We can cover when players are on holiday or have work commitments, which means we’re very rarely under-strength.

“We’re also know how to win the league, this time round was so much more relaxed than the first one in 2011.”

Wimbledon now have the small matter of a trip to the Oval on Friday to defend their National Club T20 title.

Turk’s men take on Banbury in the semi-final, with either Chester Le Street or Ormskirk waiting the victors.

Turk said: “We have always said that our main goal is to win the league, we would rather win the league then the T20 cup.

“Going to the Oval, which is like a home game for a side from Surrey, knowing we have won the league is a great feeling, because we have achieved what we wanted to achieve already.”

The T20s finals day is live on Sky Sports 2 from 12.30 on Friday.
