Weybridge skipper Joel Pope says a second placed Surrey Championship Premier League finish has given his side the thirst to secure the title next term.

The Hanger Hill outfit lost at Guildford by 48 runs on the season's final day on Saturday as Wimbledon claimed the crown with a dramatic one wicket win over Banstead to finish 13 points clear at the top.

Weybridge came close to being relegated from the top flight 12 months ago, but with virtually the same side have pushed their rivals all the way this year.

And Pope, who is yet to confirm whether he will skipper the team next term, wants more.

"Of course this has given us the thirst to go and win it next year," he said.

"I couldn't be prouder of the guys. To go from a relegation fight to pushing one of the country's best teams all the way is a fantastic achievement.

"It proves that cricket is 90 per cent in your head and 10 per cent on the pitch.

"As soon as you get yourself on a winning streak confidence only gets higher and that breeds success.

"We've got great players here and confidence is now very high, so I do not think there is any reason why we cannot give it a good go next year."

Wimbledon's win meant even if Weybridge had overhauled the 217-7 Guildford reached, they would not have lifted the crown.

In the event, Pope's side collapsed to 169 all out inside 35 overs.

Meanwhile, Neil Turk's Wimbledon held Banstead to 197-7, despite the best efforts of opener Daniel Newton(101*).

The Church Road outfit slumped to 69-6 in reply before Ben Compton's unbeaten 75 steadied the ship, but it required a nerve shredding last wicket 42-run stand with Jack Snape (12*) to get them home.
