Neil Baker will not relax until Spencer’s Surrey Championship Premier Division safety is mathematically guaranteed.

The Earlsfield-based club moved a step closer to staying in the top tier with an eight-wicket win over bottom club East Molesey on Saturday that took them 29 points clear of the drop zone with four games left.

If they win this Saturday and East Molesey and Malden Wanderers do not, then Spencer will stay up. But, with their next three games against top-four teams – Banstead, Sunbury and Wimbledon – there is no guarantee of victory.

“To win the last two games and get 23 points has really boosted us up the table,” said skipper Baker.

“We are probably thinking one more win but until it is mathematically certain we are always looking over our shoulder.

“If we put our full side out we can challenge the sides at the top and we had a close game against Banstead earlier in the season that we were probably a little bit unlucky not to win.”

On Saturday, openers Jonathan Batty (106) and Hugo Darby (79) were the stars for Spencer, putting on a first-wicket partnership of 193 as they chased down Moseley’s 224 all out.

While former England stars Batty, Michael Carberry and Alex Tudor often get the headlines for Spencer, Darby has come to the fore in recent weeks – taking four wickets as well on Saturday.

“He is only 19 and came through our youth set up so it is good he is taking on some responsibility,” added Baker.

“The past six weeks he has been very strong and we are absolutely delighted for him.”
