Leatherhead CC skipper Matt Joblin and his charges may have gone into the unknown in their first ever season in Division One of the Surrey Championship, but that has not stopped them taking it by storm.

Last weekend’s five-wicket win over Farnham not only kept Leatherhead at the top of the tree, but it opened up a 19-point gap to second-placed Valley and a 26-point gap to third placed Normandy.

However, Joblin remains uninterested in promotion talk, because the club is all about nothing except enjoying cricket.

“Promotion is something that people talk to us about, but we’re not talking about it,” he said.

“Yes, we’re top but we’re only just halfway through the season.”

The reason Leatherhead are top rests on just one defeat in 10 games, and a momentum-gathering winning streak of seven.

Joblin said: “We’ve had a very relaxed approach to the division this season because we really did not know what to expect.

“We are very fortunate to have a squad of 16 or 17 players who can easily play first team cricket, so when someone is missing, which inevitably happens, we are not weakened.

“But the squad is also very committed to the cause, they work for each other and they really enjoy their cricket.

“When players are enjoying the game, winning comes as second nature – although we know that if we lose, it is not the end of the world.”

Against Farnham on Saturday, Leatherhead were put into field and Jonathan Tribe’s 3-43 were the stand-out figures as the visitors put on 281-9.

In reply, Leatherhead batting throughout the card – Adrian Kritzinger top-scored with 76 – to reach the target in the 60th over.

They go to Beddington this weekend.

In the Premier Division, Banstead went down to a shock defeat at home to previously winless Sutton.

Sutton made 241-9, and Banstead reached 47 without loss, but then the wickets tumbled and they collapsed to 168 all out.

Banstead travel to Reigate Priory on Saturday.

Epsom’s Godfrey Stevens took three wickets and hit 60 runs as the Division Three leaders continued their unbeaten season with a five-wicket win over Bank of England.

Bank were skittled for 204, and Epsom ticked off the runs in 44.5 overs.

Epsom go to Cobham Avorians tomorrow (Saturday).
