Herne Hill Harriers enjoyed a successful Surrey County Championships at Kingsmeadow last weekend as they took home a total of 53 medals, writes Steve Bosley.

They took home 21 gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze medals as well as a number of new personal bests.

International long jumper Jade Johnson jumped 6.25m as she started her bid to compete in a third Olympic Games.

It gave her the win by some distance but was a long way down on the Olympic B standard of 6.65m or the leading UK leap of 6.89m set by Shara Proctor.

In the U13 age group, there were double wins for Denisha Marshall-Brown, in the girls’ 100m in 13.81 seconds and the girl’s shot putt with a 9.89m throw, and Sam Cohen, in the boys’ 800m in two minutes, 21.79 seconds and the high jump with a 1.32m jump.

Katie Snowden and Aisha Naibe-Wey set championship best performances, with Snowden winning the U20 women’s 800m in 2:08.45 seconds, and Naibe-Wey winning the U20 women’s 400m hurdles in 61.42 seconds.

Lots of athletes from the club set personal bests as the medals accumulated over the weekend with notable improvements including Tayo Haycocks's 1.90m in winning the U17 men's high jump and Michella Obijiaki, whose winning throw of 12.16m in the U15 girls shot putt was one of the longest in the country so far this summer.
