Herne Hill Harriers M50 squad are the kings of the nation after being crowned South of England Road Relay champions for the second successive year.

This year’s victorious vets team won by a huge margin of two minutes 32 seconds around the 6km undulating course.

Tom Conlon led off with a time of 21 minutes 21 seconds, handing over to Keith Newton in third place.

Newton’s run of 20:58 sent David Robinson off just behind the leader, and Robinson recorded 20.35 to put the race beyond doubt with one runner left.

It was left to Gary Ironmonger to bring the team home with his split of 21:08.

The team placed fifth in the overall veterans relays meaning only four of the M40 teams were quicker.

They also clocked the fourth fastest cumulative M50 time recorded in the history of this championship event.
