Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s top teenage sprinter Theo Etienne has been selected to represent Great Britain in the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden.

Etienne will be hoping to make his international debut in the 4x100m relay when competition gets underway today (Thursday).

The 18-year-old was selected after showing his best form in an international meeting in Mannheim, Germany, at the end of last month when he finished fourth in the 100m in 10.54 seconds.

He also clocked a fast 10.58 in taking fifth place in the England U20 championships at Bedford last month behind his Hercules Wimbledon club mate Rechmial Miller, who took the bronze medal in 10.50.

Miller has already been selected for the IAAF World Youth Games taking place in Call, Colombia, and the Commonwealth Youth Games being held in Somoa in September.

Miller’s younger brother, Chad, 15, reached the final of the English schools intermediate boys 200m championship at Gateshead over the weekend.

He clocked 22.33secs into a slight headwind, only just outside his personal best of 22.1secs set in taking the silver medal in last month’s Surrey Schools Championships at Kingsmeadow stadium.

A trio of Hercules Wimbledon athletes helped Surrey to take runners-up spot in an eight-counties inter-county meeting at Crawley on Sunday.

Ben Toomer was runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase while Fred Slemeck and Matt Sharp were fourth and fifth in the 5,000m.

Elsewhere, Hercules Wimbledon youngsters produced their best team performance of the season when they finished third in the third of this season’s Ebbisham Boys’ League matches at Stompond Lane, Walton, on Sunday.

The highlight came at the end of the match when the U13 4x200m quartet of Miles Ayoola, Robert Philpott, Nathanael Pongolati and Jaleel Roper stormed to victory in a club record-breaking time of 1:47.1.

Earlier, Roper, the UK U13 60m, 100m and 200m record-holder, claimed a comfortable sprint double in 12.3secs and 24.2secs with Ayoola and Philpott ensuring maximum points in taking the B races.

Lloyd Smith and Eitan Orenstein gained maximum points in the U15 800m in taking the A and B races while Zac Purnell and Henry Silverstein took the 1,500m A and B races.

Hercules Wimbledon newcomer Richard McDowell was an impressive winner of the Surrey Badger half-marathon in Dorking on Sunday, beating a 400-strong field and finishing more than three minutes clear of the runner-up with Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Neil Fraser in third place.

The previous day, Fraser led home a record 32 Hercules Wimbledon runners in the Wimbledon Common 5km parkrun in finishing third out of 414 runners in 17:17.

Rob Tuer was runner-up out of 109 runners in the Evesham 5km parkrun.

Annemarie Seymour was top woman over 40 finisher in a five miles multi-terrain race on Wimbledon Common on Sunday while Caroline Jackson was 10th out of more than 6,500 runners jun the British 10km women’s race in central London, also on Sunday.

Hercules Wimbledon’s Peter Giles was top veteran over-70 finisher in the British Masters 15 miles off-road championship at Wadhurst. He was 218th out of 679 runners.

Hercules Wimbledon's track and field training sessions take place at Wimbledon Park athletics stadium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6.30pm and Sunday mornings at 10.30am. Further details from coaching coordinator Maurice Sharp on 020 8337 8707.
