Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's teenage sprinter Chad Miller completed a hectic weekend at the South of England indoor championships at Lee Valley Athletics stadium on Sunday, by winning silver in the men's U17 200m final.

It underlined his impressive start to 2015 after posting a lifetime best 60m time on New Year's Day.

The 14-year-old clinched the medal in his sixth race of the weekend in a lifetime best of 23.06 seconds, missing out on the gold medal by less than half-a-second.

It was the first time he had run 200m indoors and his time improved on his 23.25secs clocked on the outdoor track at Lee Valley last August.

He did clock a faster wind-assisted 22.87 in taking the bronze medal in the England championships at Bedford in the same month.

What impressed Miller's coach, his dad Paul, himself a former Surrey 100m champion, was the way the young sprinter improved through the rounds.

He won his heat in 23.65secs, and then took the semi-final in 23.43secs before going even faster in the final just half-an-hour later.

The previous day, Miller was in action in the 60m championship.

After finishing second in both his heat and semi-final in 7.31secs and 7.25secs, he finished sixth in the final in a slower 7.37secs.

"After the 60m, I thought about pulling him out of the 200m," said dad Paul. "But, I'm pleased I let him run. He is an impressively determined young runner."

Miller started the year in style by clocking a lifetime best 60m in the Lee Valley New Year Open on January 1 in winning his race in 7.22secs, improving on his 7.45secs set in the England indoor championships in Sheffield last March.

Chad Miller is not the only Hercules Wimbledon young gun to have started 2015 in style.

Jaleel Roper, who won't be 12 until next month, smashed the UK boys' U13 indoor 60m record at the South London Athletics Network's indoor open meeting at the David Weir Leisure Centre, Sutton.

Running indoor for the first time, he clocked 7.56secs in the fastest of his three races to slice three-hundredths of a second off the previous best UK mark set by London Schools 100m champion William Andoh at Newham in February last year.

Roper, another member of Paul Miller's talented squad, clocked 7.58secs and 7.59secs in his other two races which impressive broke and equalled the previous UK record.

Hercules Wimbledon's track and field training sessions take place at Wimbledon Park athletics stadium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6.30pm and Sunday mornings at 10.30am. Further details from coaching coordinator Maurice Sharp on 020 8337 8707.
