Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's super-veteran runner Peter Giles celebrated his selection for the Home Countries Veterans cross-country international later this month with a record-breaking performance in the Bushy Park 5km parkrun on Saturday.

Giles, 70, broke the veterans over-70 course record, as well as setting a Hercules Wimbledon club record for the age group, when he posted the top age-graded performance in finishing 50th out of 979 runners in 19 minutes 57 seconds.

Giles, who will be representing England in the British and Irish Masters International cross-country meeting in Nottingham on November 22, was competing in his first parkrun since 2009 when he also ran at Bushy Park.

His run on Saturday ranks him third among Britain's 70-year-olds. He is also ranked third over 5,000 and 10,000m, and second over 1,500m in the UK for his age group.

Hercules Wimbledon's over-45 veteran Lisa Thomas also posted the top age-graded performance in repeating her achievement of the previous weekend by winning the women's event in the Wimbledon Common 5km parkrun in 20:01.

First Hercules Wimbledon finisher was Dave Scrimshaw, seventh in 18:53, with Charles Hampden-Smith, once again top over-50 performer finishing 13th in 19:44. He was also posted the top male age-graded performance.

Hampden-Smith and Thomas were in action again on Sunday when they competed in the Mornington Chasers 10km road race in Regents Park.

Thomas won the women's race in 41:20, finishing 33rd overall out of 420 runners, with Hampden-Smith third in the ove-50 category in 40:47, taking 24th place overall.

At the other end of the age scale, 12-year-old Alexander Abrahams posted a personal best of 19:54 in finishing 16th and beating the 20-minute barrier for the first time.

His previous best in 55 parkun appearances was 20:33 in June 2013.

Young Abrahams completed a weekend double when he headed home an 89-strong field in the Wimbledon Park junior 2km parkrun on Sunday in 7:46 to win by 11 seconds. 

Elsewhere, teenager Matt Gibbons clocked a personal best time when he headed home a trio of Hercules Wimbledon runners in the Richmond 5km parkrun in finishing fourth out of 364 runners in 18:05.

It took 55 seconds off his previous best set in February.

Jack Collins was fifth in 18:06 with 13-year-old Ben Tatters also clocking a personal best time of 18:06 in sixth spot.

He took 18 seconds off his previous best time set in May and equalled in September.

In her first race for three months, Hercules Wimbledon's Steph Robson was just pipped in the women's event in Old Deer Park where she clocked 20:59, just one second behind the first woman.

Over-45 veteran Stuart Fraser was second out of more than 200 runners in Bishop's Park, Fulham, in 17:12, the top age-graded performance of the day, Ciarra Kennedy was third woman in the Larne, Northern Ireland, parkrun in 25:39, while James Moorcroft was eighth out of 383 runners at Newbury in 18:54.

On the road, Steve Bayton headed home a 182-strong field to gain a runaway win in the Weymouth 10km road race in Dorset.

He finished almost four minutes ahead of the second runner in 54:31.
