Carshalton Athletic's new manager Tommy Williams says his appointment can stablilise the club and that he is hungry for success.

The manager's position has been vacant since Paul Dipre stepped down in the wake of the FA Cup defeat to Chalfont St Peter last month.

Ian Hazel took over as caretaker manager but handed the reins to Williams before the 2-0 Ryman Premier Division deafeat to Bognor Regis.

However, since then the Robins have beaten Hastings United in the league and won a League Cup penalty shoot at Leatherhead.

Williams said: "This is my third spell here and I know the players, the club and the history, and I know what the club means to the fans.

"We've had a couple of good results and I think the board recognised that, as well as my determination and hunger to succeed.

"It is a real privilege to be manager of such a great club with a great history and I can promise the fans that I will work day and night to bring success back here."

He added: "Stability is important, especially for the players. Maybe bringing in someone completely new would have done nothing more than destabilise them further.

"I can bring in players if I want but I made six changes to the team that beat Hastings and they still beat Leatherhead. I know some players have gone, but it shows we have a good squad here and that it is well capable of competing with anyone.

"I am not going to flood the squad with loads of the players, they have to be the right ones."

Williams faces a baptism of fire as Carshalton have a tough league trip to near-neighbours Kingstonian tomorrow (Saturday), before hosting high-flying Whitehawk on Tuesday night.

The former Kingstonian man said: "I won promotion with Kingstonian so I know them very well. It is certainly a challenge but we've prepared the players well, they had a good training session last night (Thursday) and we're going there with a couple wins which gives us confidence."
