Esher maybe bored of head coach Ollie Smith pre-match mantra already, but they heeded his warning in style to secure a second win of the season on Saturday.
Many of Smith’s squad had been struck down by a mystery virus in the build up to the trip to skipper Ian Kench’s old stomping ground, but it didn’t show as tries from Joe Brown, Luke Daniels, George Merrick, Mike Macfarlane and Spencer Sutherland saw off Loughborough Students 37-22.
“Our style of rugby requires a lot of running and a few of the boys were coughing and spluttering at the end, because of a virus,” he said.
“I tell them before every game that we are everyone’s cup final in this league. Everyone wants to prove themselves against a former Championship side. They might be bored of it, but they have taken it on board.
“We have to win at places like Loughborough. We did a good job and I was delighted to get the try bonus point. We have to address our defence.”
Esher travel to Wharfedale on Saturday.
