Herne Hill Harriers’ men’s track and field team are celebrating promotion to the Premiership of the British Athletics League.
The team went to Eton for the final National League One match of the season needing to finish in the top six to be certain of promotion and despite a performance that was below par, they scraped into fifth spot by one point.
It was enough to finish second in the overall standings, just one point behind champions Enfield & Haringey.
On the day there were no A string winners, but Taiwo Aderini jumped a personal best of 14.59m to win the B string triple jump and Sammy Croll-Mensah won the B string 400m in 49.42 seconds.
In the A string events, Peter Phillips placed second in the 400m clocking 47.95 seconds, Shola Olojo jumped 14.76m for second place in the triple jump and Gavin Johnson-Assoon threw a personal best of 62.31m to finish second in the javelin.
Herne Hill Harriers’ long jump junior record holder Jonathan Grant was in inspired form taking second with a leap of 7.15m.
Elsewhere, the club held its fourth open track and field meeting at Tooting Bec Athletics Track on Saturday - incorporating the Surrey Championship 10,000m.
