Redhill 1 v 0 Whyteleafe

FA Extra Preliminary Round

By Adam Motty

Whyteleafe’s FA Cup ambitions ended at Redhill's Kiln Brow on Saturday as their inglorious relationship with the competition continues.

Despite having the majority of play, Leafe could not stop tumbling out of the Cup at the first hurdle for the fourth consecutive season.

The hosts took the lead on 10 minutes after a spell of early pressure ended with Guy Sousa having the time and space to beat Paul Smith.

Leafe reacted well and Jay Garrick almost levelled when Redhill's John Gifford slipped, leaving Garrick with only the keeper to beat, however he fired wide from a tight angle.

Sean Rivers also came close to restoring parity when he managed to turn and get a shot away from just outside the penalty area. However, his half volley smashed against the crossbar and went behind for a goal kick.

Leafe hit the crossbar again when Louis Clark connected with Ryan Maxwell's free kick only for his shot to thunder back off the woodwork.

The visitors enjoyed the lion's share of possession and chances after the break but some wayward finishing and good goalkeeping kept then at bay.

In the end, Leafe did not look like getting the money-spinning equaliser and Redhill continued into the next round.

Leafe’s next fixture is away to VCD Athletic in the Kent League Premier Division on Saturday.
